Millets & Rice
Getting Started with Millets: A Karnataka Kitchen Guide
Know your Navane, Same and Baragu, and bring familiar grains into everyday meals.

Get to know the names
Foxtail Millet is Navane, Little Millet is Same and Barnyard Millet is Oodalu. Finger Millet is Ragi, Pearl Millet is Sajje and Proso Millet is Baragu. Kodo Millet is Haraka — it is not the same grain as Baragu. Names on packs can vary, so confirm the grain before purchasing.
Start with a familiar meal
Try using a suitable whole millet in a familiar upma or a simple grain bowl. Ragi flour is commonly used in Karnataka for mudde, dosa and other dishes, but flour and whole grain require different preparation. Follow a trusted recipe for the specific grain and form you have bought.
Preparation and storage
Sort and rinse whole grains as needed and follow the pack's soaking and cooking instructions. Water ratios and cooking times differ by grain, processing and recipe. Store unopened packs according to their label; after opening, keep grains in a clean, dry, airtight container away from moisture.
Make informed choices
Check the pack size, ingredients, best-before date and allergen or cross-contact information. Millets are foods, not medicines, and no single grain replaces a varied diet. For an individual medical or dietary requirement, consult a qualified professional.
